Corliss Center Creates New Sensory Garden

A Community Coming Together

The Corliss Center is a very special program in Warren, RI, that provides residential programs and daily services to developmentally disabled adults who are also deaf. More importantly, we believe that our disabled members should have the same opportunities as everyone else to live a

full life and enjoy participating in the many benefits that nature has to offer.

In the Spring of 2025, Corliss partnered with the Pearl Street Garden with the hopes of building a garden in a large, central, (uncared for) green area that is surrounded by the Corliss Day Program Center, Administrative Office and 3 Group homes that operate 24-7. This initial seed of an idea has grown into so much more than “just a garden” over the past few months.

One of our members, Bertha, has lived an active life, including having developed a love for growing flowers and vegetables. A few years ago, she moved from an independent apartment program into a group home where she could receive the care she requires as she transitions into

her senior years. In her group home she continued her love of gardening by growing tomato plants on her porch. Our new garden has not only gave her a place to transplant her tomatoes, but an opportunity to work in a large, outdoor environment that brings her the joy of doing her

beloved gardening, while providing the satisfaction of seeing the results of her labor.

The Corliss Sensory Garden brings our members happiness and satisfaction. The newly-constructed garden at

the Corliss Center in Warren, RI, has provided a wonderful and natural opportunity for many members to create, build, and “work” in their garden over the past spring and summer. We look forward to seeing what our second season will bring!

Models bring the fun to Warren Fashion Show

Corliss Center announces plan for sensory garden

The Corliss Center at 290 Main Street in Warren is creating a sensory garden and is welcoming volunteers to join in the project. On Friday, June 20, from 9:00 to 3:00 there will be site preparation, and on Thursday, June 26, there will be a community planting day from 9:00 to 3:00. Interested in being part of this project? Corliss Center Hosts Easter Luncheon

Members of The Corliss Center were invited to a festive Easter luncheon held at the Center on Main Street in Warren. The lovely Easter luncheon was organized by Natasha Mancieri, bookkeeper at Corliss. The setting was complete with beautifully-decorated tables featuring spring flowers. Gathering for food and social time together is always a welcomed part of community life!

Corliss Center Hosts Annual Christmas Party

On December 23, the members and families of Corliss enjoyed a delicious buffet luncheon in a festive atmosphere at the Center. The event included a visit from Santa, who brought smiles all around as members received personalized gifts. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Bank Newport and Bank of America for their generous sponsorship of this joyous occasion. Adding to the fun, Finance Manager Stacy Santos brought her dog along, providing an extra treat for everyone. It was a wonderful day .

Corliss Institute Hires New Executive Director.

Rick Clarkson knocked on the door after learning the woman residing inside had a plumbing issue. He had only been on the job as the Executive Director of the Corliss Institute for a matter of days, but with no one else immediately around to answer the call, he sought to address the issue right away.

But there was a problem, because the woman couldn’t hear him knocking at her door.

Like many of the people who rent condos from one of the Corliss Institute’s group homes in uptown Warren, she was deaf. But even after getting her attention utilizing the Telecommunications Relay Services, Clarkson learned while signing with the woman that she had also become mostly blind due to another condition she had developed. But Clarkson persisted.

“Our maintenance guy called a local plumber, and he got there in an hour,” he recalled. “Like, where else does that happen?”

It’s an anecdote that pretty perfectly encapsulates the value of the Corliss Institute, a nonprofit organization that for around 40 years has sought to provide a variety of services to developmentally disabled people who are also deaf.
